New Georgia Project Policy Director’s Statement on GA Secretary of State’s New Voter Registration Cancellation Website
(Atlanta, Georgia) – New Georgia Project (NGP) Policy Director, Stephanie Jackson Ali, released the following statement after Georgia Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, announced a new website to cancel voter registrations.
“The new voter registration cancellation website launched by Brad Raffensperger’s office is unnecessary and runs the risk of further confusing voters when exercising our right to vote in Georgia has already become more complicated in the past few years. We are in the middle of a high-stakes election year, and the last thing Georgia voters need is another change to our elections administration. The website is poorly designed, looking exactly like the Secretary of State’s My Voter Page, where voters go to find their polling location, look up their sample ballot, and—you guessed it—register to vote and check their registration status. Having two nearly identical sites could lead voters to accidentally begin the cancellation process when what they want to do is cast their ballot.
This website is a poorly designed, bad idea with little-to-no purpose intentionally rolled out at a terrible time. The Secretary of State’s office needs to put more safeguards in place so that this tool is not abused by bad actors and so that voters understand its intended purpose and how and when to use it.”
