New Georgia Project Showcases the Beauty and Power of Voting With GOTV Murals Throughout Metro Atlanta

December 19, 2020 Atlanta, GA – Beginning this weekend, The New Georgia Project, the nonpartisan organization behind registering nearly 500,000 people from underrepresented communities to vote in Georgia, is unveiling a collection of street art in partnership with local artists throughout the Metro Atlanta area that are designed to encourage residents to vote in the upcoming Senate runoff election on January 5.

From the fall of the Berlin Wall to Brexit to Bernie to Banksy to babies being separated from their families at the U.S. border, street art has long been recognized as an important part of political participation. Muralists have not only used their work to weigh in on heavy, important political matters and start conversations amongst the public, political street art has been used to question decision-makers, challenge policies, and inspire people to act.

“What we saw in November, is that Georgians are powerful. We turned out in historic numbers to exercise our power at the ballot box, and we’re going to do it again, ” said New Georgia Project CEO Nse Ufot. “These murals will serve as a visible reminder that our voice matters. That our vote counts.”

Murals, billboards, posters, and more by local artists including Dr. Fahamu Pecou, Janique Booker, Courtney Brooks, Miriam Robinson, TeMika Grooms, Aysha Pennerman, Philip Crawford, Sean David, Craig Flux Singleton aka C Flux Sing, Bahman Akhavan, Kris Pilcher, Joseph Dreher aka JOEKINGATL, and Adam Crawford, will be featured throughout the city showcasing depictions of civil rights leaders, youth and next generation voters and other images promoting the get out the vote message.

“By using these images of two Black boys, who also happen to be my two sons and their friends, they inspire me to expect more from my community, to hope for a brighter future for them, and to inspire others to want the same for their children,” said mural artist Aysha Pennerman.

The art was organized through a collaboration with Culture Surge, an organization empowering artists to use art and culture to change the world. The art is centered around the message that together, we have power. See below for specific locations.

Early voting began December 14 and runs through December 31. Please visit https://readyset.vote/ for specific voting information within your county.
