(Atlanta, Georgia) – New Georgia Project invites you to join us at Underground Atlanta on May 7th for This is Not a Game: Live!—a celebratory kickoff to early voting for Georgia’s primary elections and the official launch of our new civic-tech platforms: the ballot-making website ReadySet.Vote, our flagship New Georgia Project app, a video game app This is Not a Game.
This exciting event, curated by producer STLNDRMS, includes a program hosted by V-103’s Kenny Burns that will feature NGP staff, Georgia voters, and a live, on-stage demonstration and competition of This is Not a Game. The event will also feature entertainment, food, special guests (including: DJ Empress Rah, J Black, Iman Ndegeocello, and Blk Cubes) and opportunities for attendees to learn about and get involved in NGP’s work. In addition to This is Not a Game, NGP will also debut our new online tool, ReadySet.Vote, which allows voters to learn about candidates’ platforms and positions and build their own personalized ballots online. Best of all, the event will feature a gaming station where guests can use ReadySet.Vote in real time, participate in a Super Smash Bros. gaming tournament for a chance to win cash prizes, and try out This is Not a Game for themselves.
“Our goal is to bring some much-needed excitement and innovation into the civic engagement space and to introduce our youngest-ever universe of voters to the joys of democratic participation” says New Georgia Project CEO Nsé Ufot. “But, at the same, we’re here to remind folks that protecting our democracy is not a game. We don’t play or mess around when it comes to defending our voting rights. We’re here to defeat Mr. System for real.”
This is Not a Game is New Georgia Project’s latest venture into gamification, but certainly not its first. NGP has previously introduced Game Jam—a video game development contest aimed at increasing Black and brown civic engagement—and has hosted “Unlock the Box,” the first ever voting rights hackathon.
Changing the culture of voting and meeting voters where they are—whether that’s at the doors, on Twitch, or at Underground Atlanta—is core to NGP’s mission. We invite members of the media to join us to celebrate the start of early voting and the launch of This is Not a Game, and to bring necessary attention to the important work our organizers are doing to engage voters and amplify their voices.
