New Georgia Project Condemns Georgia State Elections Board Rule that Makes Delaying Election Certification Easier

(Atlanta, Georgia) – New Georgia Project (NGP) released the following statement after the Georgia State Elections Board adopted a new rule allowing county boards of election to delay certification of the November election results:

“The election certification rule adopted today by the Georgia State Elections Board (SEB) is an attack on Georgians’ right to vote. The rule, which makes it easier for county boards of election to delay or even avoid election certification in November, is a blatant attempt to silence the voices of Georgia voters and undermine our already fragile democracy.

‘The SEB’s new rule does nothing more than continue to feed lies about election fraud in Georgia,’ said NGP Policy Director, Stephanie Jackson Ali. ‘In a high-stakes election year when our democracy is on the ballot, the last thing we need is more wiggle room for election deniers to cast unfounded doubt over our elections processes. Georgia’s elections officials should be focused on supporting our elections administration, increasing trust in our election results, and expanding access to the ballot box.’

With Election Day just 78 days away, NGP will ramp up our work with county boards of elections officials, urging them to certify the election results in accordance with state law by the November [X] deadline.

Georgia remains a key swing state this year, and Georgia voters will, undoubtedly, determine the outcome of the Presidential race, just as we did in 2020. Georgia voters deserve to feel confident when going to the ballot box and to know that our votes will be counted. Anything less is an affront to our basic right to vote in this country.”
