Director of Finance & Operations
Why do you to this work?
Advocacy and education are two things that I find really important. Helping to support those who have less than, or just don't know any better, and then educating them leads to a more informed and powerful community. I have been doing this work for with NGP for 3 years, and prior to that, I worked in nonprofits for 23 years. It's my life's work. It makes me feel good to see the changes in action.
How has this work changed you?
Initially I worked in education for low-income families. Now, educating people of color about how their voices can be heard, and how they can be more effective in their communities and in our government is SO important.
It also has informed me about the voter suppression that continues to happen. I was so unaware of it, but voter suppression is real and it is daily. This works has changed me into a person who is more educated about our government and how it regulates citizens. This work has made me want to scream louder and advocate harder to have a better Georgia.
If you could have dinner with anyone dead or alive, who would it be and why?
I would want to have dinner with Barack Obama and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I would ask them how to best engage young men of color around politics and policing, in order for us to change our communities.
I know that people are talking about the women's movement and #metoo, and I commend them, however, we cannot forget there is no community without a family. To have a strong community, the family needs to be cohesive, with a black man being able to support his family and have a say in the community. Men of color are struggling harder than women of color. I worry about where they are going to be in the nex 5 or 20 years. I want to do something meaningingful to support them in reclaiming a place in our country's history - their rightful place. Those would be two good people to do that - one who is going to fight in the streets and help me do that, and one who has been in power and knows how to do that.
